Chet Baker & Gerry Mulligan- Carioca

This is from a time when no self-respecting Jazz musician, especially one with a big band arranging background like Gerry Mulligan, “would go anywhere” [i.e. play a tune/song] without an arrangement. This track, comprised of a very pedestrian tune – “The Carioca” – has so much going on in it thanks to Gerry’s treatment of it that its sounds like a more complicated, lengthier piece. And yet, all this brilliant music takes place in less than 2.30 minutes! From when Giants walked the earth.
