For Carl by the Phineas Newborn, Jr. Trio

“THE PRESENCE IN HOLLYWOOD of the Cannonball Adderley Quintet when Phineas cut Side 2 assured Phineas of another peerless rhythm team, Sam Jones and Louis Hayes.”

For Carl (named for the late pianist Carl Perkins, 1928-1958) is a melodically simple and completely delightful waltz written by bassist Leroy Vinnegar as his memorial to the pianist both he and Phineas admired. Phineas lends the minor theme a lilt that seems to derive from a cross-pollination bred somewhere between Birdland and Vienna. Watch for Sam’s tasty variations from a regular three, especially during the theme.” – Leonard Feather
